Google DeepMind Unveils Genie 4 World Model with Native Audio, Speech and Improved Physics
Google DeepMind announced Genie 4, a real-time world model that uses Gemini 3.8 Flash as a guiding agent and adds native audio, interactive human speech, more realistic people and better physics such as aerodynamics and collisions. Worlds still stay consistent for only a couple of minutes. Access will roll out in phases to developers via the Gemini API and AI Studio and to AI Ultra subscribers, with no firm timeline or pricing yet.
Skynet Chance (+0.03%): More realistic world simulation could supply effectively unlimited training environments for embodied agents and robots, widening the physical-world capabilities of AI systems. The phased, limited release and the model's known consistency limits temper the added risk.
Skynet Date (-1 days): Better simulators for training robots and agents could speed up the development of capable autonomous systems. That modestly accelerates the timeline for related risks.
AGI Progress (+0.03%): DeepMind explicitly calls world models key to AGI, and Genie 4 improves physics fidelity, adds multimodal audio and speech, and uses agentic guidance to keep simulations coherent. Persistent short-horizon memory limits show the approach remains incomplete.
AGI Date (-1 days): Iterating quickly from Genie 3 to Genie 4 and opening developer API access should accelerate world-model research and the training of embodied agents. This nudges AGI timelines earlier.
