Anthropic S-1 Filing Warns It May Soon Reach Recursive Self-Improvement Threshold
In its revised S-1A, Anthropic added risk-factor disclosures stating that it has already used AI to develop models whose capability leaps it didn't recognize at the time, and that it may soon meet its internal definition of recursive self-improvement (RSI). The company says no model has crossed the threshold yet. It is considering Responsible Scaling Policy updates to keep humans in control of frontier model development.
Skynet Chance (+0.09 pp): A frontier lab admits it used AI to build models whose capability jumps it failed to recognize, and that it is nearing self-improving AI, a core pathway to loss of control. Its pledge to keep humans in the loop partly offsets this.
Skynet Date (2 days sooner): Being close to AI-driven acceleration of AI development compresses the timeline toward potentially uncontrollable systems. The proposed RSP safeguards may add only modest friction.
AGI Progress (+0.05 pp): AI already contributing materially to frontier model R&D, with RSI reportedly near, signals a major step toward automated capability growth central to AGI. Strong recent gains in coding, math and cybersecurity reinforce this.
AGI Date (1 day sooner): Recursive self-improvement would sharply accelerate progress, suggesting AGI could arrive sooner than expected. Some discount is warranted because S-1 language may partly serve marketing purposes.
