Wiz CTO Warns AI-Accelerated Vulnerability Discovery Threatens Aging Internet Code After PHP Bugs
Two critical bugs in PHP, which underpins roughly 70% of websites, forced organizations to scramble to patch, with some taking sites offline. Wiz CTO Tomer Schwartz, who worked with OpenAI, research group Calif and the PHP team on the fix, said on TechCrunch's Equity podcast that AI is speeding up how quickly novel vulnerabilities are found and exploited. He argued that patching by hand will not scale.
Skynet Chance (+0.03%): AI systems that rapidly discover and enable exploitation of critical software flaws widen the attack surface for misuse or autonomous harm across internet infrastructure. That raises the risk of AI-driven loss of control over critical digital systems.
Skynet Date (+0 days): The pace of AI-enabled exploitation is outrunning manual defenses, which modestly speeds the arrival of AI-related systemic risks.
AGI Progress (+0.01%): AI finding novel critical vulnerabilities shows growing practical competence in code reasoning. Still, this is a narrow domain capability rather than a general advance.
AGI Date (+0 days): The story concerns security consequences of existing AI capabilities and gives no signal about faster or slower AGI development.
