OpenAI Reportedly Seeks $30B Pre-IPO Round at $1.4 Trillion Valuation, Delays IPO Citing Safety
Bloomberg reports that OpenAI is in talks to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, as a bridge round ahead of an IPO now expected next year. Run-rate revenue has reportedly risen 70% since July to $40 billion, helped by a strategic focus on coding. CEO Sam Altman has ruled out a 2026 public debut so the company can put AI safety first, saying a 10% chance of AI 'killing everybody' by the end of the decade is unacceptable.
Skynet Chance (+0.01%): Another large injection of capital increases competitive pressure and capability development. Altman's stated safety-first reason for delaying the IPO partly offsets this, so the net effect is only slightly upward.
Skynet Date (+0 days): Tens of billions in new funding speed up compute buildout and frontier development, bringing potential risks a little sooner. Delaying the IPO has little effect on research pace.
AGI Progress (0%): Rapid revenue growth and a $1.4T valuation show strong commercial traction and investor confidence. Together with the new capital, this funds continued scaling toward more general capabilities.
AGI Date (+0 days): More funding lets OpenAI spend more on compute and research, which modestly speeds up the expected AGI timeline. The size of the round fits the existing trend, though, so the effect is incremental rather than transformative.
